21st Century Tile Technology,
Techniques and Trends
The Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF) offers a one-day
tile installation seminar on how to apply 21st Century Tile
Technology, Techniques and Trends.
Course Objective: The course is designed to improve
tile installation workmanship and provide the knowledge necessary
to reduce the risk of installation failures while better understanding
the installation process. This regional, 8-hour lecture with
overheads and handouts includes the following:
* Tile knowledge and identification of most common types of
tile,
* Manufacturing process,
* Performance characteristics of tile and how they affect
use,
* Reading and referencing ANSI A137.1, ISO, and TCA Handbook
guidelines and ANSI Standards,
* Understanding proprietary installation methods and their
integration into industry guidelines,
* New guidelines for installation preparation, layout, and
setting materials requirements for wood and concrete substrates,
* Importance of proper layout, dry-set, latex, and polymer
thin-sets,
* Types of membranes - use and installation,
* Backer boards - their properties and installation, and
* Emerging topics and trends.
Cost: $1500 per course. Fee includes handouts plus
copies of the TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation
and ANSI A108 manual for 20 people. Additional sets of literature
are $20 per person.

Course objectives:
Students should: understand the role of the helper, know how
to handle, store and prepare installation materials, understand
the importance of surface preparation and housekeeping, know
how to use basic tile cutting equipment, and have an understanding
of proper disposal techniques.

margin trowel, tape measure, pencils, pens and notebook.

Tile Installation, Helpers Course

Course objectives:
Students should: understand the role of the helper, know how
to handle, store and prepare installation materials, understand

Course objectives:
Students should: have an understanding of the properties of
floor tiles, understand basic thinbed floor installation materials
and techniques, have a basic understanding of estimating and
layout, know how to apply various types of thinbed, load-bearing
protective membrane systems, and understand acceptable finishing
techniques for ceramic floor tiles.

gloves, safety glasses or shields, dust mask, ear protection,
knee pads, notched trowels, tile biters, level and straightedges,
carpenters square, margin trowel, grout trowel, carbide
scoring tool, tape measure, pencils, pens and notebook.

Students should: have an understanding of the properties of
wall tiles, understand basic thinbed wall tile installation
materials and techniques, have a basic understanding of estimating
and layout, know how to apply various types of thinbed protective
membrane systems, and understand acceptable finishing techniques
for ceramic wall tiles.

Students should: have an understanding of the properties of
countertop tiles, understand basic thinbed countertop and
ceiling tile installation materials and techniques, have a
basic understanding of estimating and layout, know how to
apply various types of thinbed protective membrane systems,
and understand acceptable finishing techniques.

Ceramic Tile Installation, Residential Flooring

Course objectives:
Students should have: an understanding of mortar bed theory
and applications, an understanding of the tools, methods and
materials used for producing mortar bed floors, the ability
to install and water test a basic shower pan and the ability
to float basic flat and sloped mortar bed floors.

knee pads, levels and straightedges, margin trowel, hammer,

Ceramic Tile Installation, Residential Walls II

Course objectives:
Students should have: an understanding of mortar bed theory
and applications, an understanding of the tools, methods and
materials used for producing mortar bed walls and the ability
to float basic mortar bed walls.

Ceramic Tile Installation Countertops and
Ceilings II

Course objectives:
Students should have: an understanding of mortar bed theory
and applications, an understanding of the tools, methods and
materials used for producing mortar bed countertops and ceilings
and the ability to float basic mortar bed countertops and
ceilings.
