Is a cleavage membrane waterproof?

ANSWER. Not always. A cleavage membrane serves to separate the installation from the substrate.

How high over the curb should the waterproof membrane extend?

ANSWER: 3" over the finished curb.

What is the recommended mix ratio of sand and cement for shower floors?

ANSWER: 4 to 1 with a water resistant additive

What is the proper pitch under a shower pan?

ANSWER: 1/4" per foot under Universal Plumbing Code and ANSI A108

What is the difference between a vapor barrier and vapor retarder?

ANSWER: A barrier has a perm rating less than 1

Most adhesive applied membranes may fail if the pH level of the concrete is how high?

ANSWER: 9 is the typical limit of most adhesives

What are weep holes and what must be done to assure they work?

ANSWER: Weep holes allow for drainage in the sub-drain in showers and possibly other areas. They must remain unobstructed.

Are all waterproof membranes rated for submerged?

ANSWER: No, they are not.

If something has a perm rating of less than 1, what is it?

ANSWER: Waterproof.

What’s the difference between a PVC and CPE membrane?

ANSWER: CPE is chlorinated and remains flexible. PVC contains plastizers and may become brittle.
