A practical, education-level class designed
to expose students to basic tile installation materials, tools
and methods. Instructor will discuss: the common misconceptions
regarding ceramic tile and tile installations, the TCA Handbook,
ANSI A108 Specifications, minimizing installation problems,
working with installation materials, housekeeping, finishing
and minor repairs.
Course objective: Students should have a greater
understanding of the installation process, be able to use
the TCA Handbook effectively, know how to mix and apply basic
installation materials and be able to use and maintain tile
installation tools.
Tools required: Will be furnished with basic tools.
You must bring your own pencils, pens and notebook.
Certification: None given. Students who complete
this course are eligible to test and receive a certificate
of satisfactory completion
Schedule
Day 1
8:00-9:00 Orientation - the instructor will discuss the students'
classroom projects, location of tools and materials, first
aid location, safety equipment, WFCA, and CTEF policies, other
rules of the classroom site and location. The purpose and
origin of WFCA, CTEF, and TCNA.

9:00-11:00 Selecting appropriate installation methods - the
instructor will discuss how to read and use the TCA Handbook
for Ceramic Tile Installation and the ANSI 108/118 Standards
for installation.

* How the standards became approved methods
11:00-12:00 ANSI 137.1 Manufacturing standards and products
Learning objective:
* Different types of products in the marketplace
* Performance characteristics of different types of tile
The importance of using understanding ANSI 137.1
12:00-1:00 Lunch break.
1:00-2:45 Substrate preparation theory and techniques - the
instructor will discuss the importance of proper substrates,
minimum substrate requirements and preparation practices.
Learning objective:
* Know minimum requirements for acceptable substrates
* Understand the importance of surface preparation
* Understand the responsibility assigned to various trades
in surface preparation
3:00-5:00 Tile Preparation materials, types of thinsets and
grouts. A discussion and demonstration of the various materials
used in conjunction with preparation and installation of ceramic
tile.

Day 2
8:00 - 9:00 Layout theory and techniques - the instructor
will discuss and demonstrate layout techniques for the most
common residential tile installations.

* Use basic layout tools
9:00-9:45 Ceramic tile installation tools and safety - the
instructor will discuss safety issues related to the installation
of ceramic tile. The operation and safe use of tile installation
tools is also covered.

* Safely use basic tile installation tools
10:00-12:00 Backerboards, Membranes, properties and installation
techniques - the instructor will discuss use and installation
of various tile backerboards and membrane systems.

* Understand how to select and install the appropriate tile
backerboard
* Understand the appropriate use and installation techniques
for various types of membranes
12:00-1:00 Lunch
1:00-5:00 Ceramic tile installation theory and techniques
- the instructor will discuss and demonstrate various thinbed
installation methods. The students will use this time to install
tiles in the modules.

varying degrees of performance

Day 3
8:00-9:30 Deflection of wood and suspended concrete substrates -
the instructor will demonstrate the deflection properties
of various types of wood subfloors and attached underlayments.
A discussion will also cover suspended concrete floors.

9:30-12:00 Ceramic tile installation theory and techniques
- the instructor will discuss and demonstrate various thinbed
installation methods. The students will resume installation
in the modules.

Day 4
8:00-9:00 Expansion joint materials and placement - the instructor
will discuss and demonstrate proper construction of movement
accommodation joints and installation of pre-made joints and
edge protection systems. A brief discussion will also be held
on crack suppression and joint relocation.

* Techniques for dealing with crack and joints affecting the
aesthetics of the installation
9:00-10:00 Grouting and finishing techniques - the instructor
will discuss and demonstrate various grouts, grouting, and
finishing materials and techniques.

* Understand how to select, mix, apply and finish grouts
10:00-10:30 Sealers and maintenance. In this session sealers
and proper methods of ceramic tile floor care will be discussed.

10:30-12:00 Grouting and finishing techniques- students will
use this time to grout modules.

2:00-4:00 Demolition of tile work in modules - students will observe for compliance to industry guidelines
while removing and disposing of materials installed in modules.
